Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 October 2026

Lipi is a video editor for Reels and Shorts, owned and managed by Thela Labs ("we", "us"). This policy explains, in plain language, what happens to your data when you use Lipi. It follows India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

The short version

  • Your videos, audio, projects and captions stay on your own computer. We never receive them.
  • You don't need an account, and we don't ask for your name, email or phone number.
  • We collect anonymous usage numbers (like "an export finished in 12 seconds") to improve Lipi. They are never tied to your identity.
  • We don't sell data, show ads, or use advertising or tracking cookies.

What stays on your device

Everything you create in Lipi (imported videos, images and music, voiceovers you record, your projects, captions and transcripts, and your settings) is stored in your browser on your own computer, using the browser's storage (IndexedDB and the Origin Private File System). Captions are generated on your computer too: the first time, your browser downloads a speech-recognition model, and your audio is processed locally.Lipi uses your microphone only while you record a voiceover, after you allow it in your browser, and the recording is saved in the project on your computer. The other AI tools (remove background, auto-reframe, caption translation, clean up voice, cut to beat and text to speech) also run on your computer: the text you type and your video and audio are never uploaded.

Because this data never reaches us, we can't see it, back it up or recover it. Clearing your browser's site data deletes it. Use Save backup (.lipi) in the editor to keep a copy. Backup files are saved wherever you choose and are not sent to us.

What we collect

Anonymous usage events. When you use Lipi, your browser sends short events to our server, for example "project created", "captions generated" or "export finished", with numbers such as video length, caption count, processing time, file size and the caption language or style you chose. Each event carries a random ID that your browser creates and keeps (named lipi-anonymous-id), and a random ID for that visit. Events never contain your video, audio, file names, transcripts or caption text, and the random ID is not linked to your name, email or device.

Feedback you send. If you use Something missing?, we store your message and the reason you picked, with the same random ID. Please don't include personal details you don't want us to have.

Technical logs. Like any website, our hosting provider records standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and the page requested) to run and protect the service. These logs are kept for a short period by the provider. We also count requests per IP address briefly, in memory only, to stop abuse. We don't store IP addresses in our database.

What we don't collect

  • Your videos, photos, music, voice, transcripts or captions.
  • Your name, email, phone number, location or contacts. There are no accounts.
  • Payment details. Lipi is free.
  • Anything from your Instagram, YouTube or other accounts.

Why we use it

We use the anonymous events and feedback only to understand how Lipi is used, find and fix problems (for example exports that fail), and decide what to build next. Server logs are used to keep the service running and secure. We don't use any of this for advertising, profiling or to make decisions about you.

Services we use

We rely on a few providers to run Lipi. They process data only to provide their service to us:

  • Vercel hosts the website and its server functions (servers in the United States).
  • Neon stores the anonymous events and feedback in a cloud Postgres database.
  • Google Fonts serves the fonts used in the editor and captions.
  • Hugging Face serves the open-source AI models your browser downloads the first time you use captions, caption translation or text to speech.

When your browser downloads fonts or the model, those services see your IP address, as with any web request. Some of these servers are outside India, so the limited data above may be processed outside India, as the DPDP Act permits.

How long we keep it

We keep anonymous usage events and feedback for as long as they help us improve Lipi, and delete them when they no longer serve that purpose or when you ask us to. Hosting logs are kept by Vercel for a limited period under its own policies. Data on your device stays until you delete it.

Cookies and browser storage

Lipi doesn't use advertising or third-party tracking cookies. It uses your browser's local storage for things the app needs: your projects and media, your preferences and keyboard shortcuts, the random analytics ID, and small notes such as whether you've seen the welcome screen. You can clear all of it at any time from your browser's settings for this site.

Your rights

Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what data we hold about you and how it is used;
  • correct or delete it;
  • stop processing it;
  • resolve a complaint (grievance).

Because our data is anonymous, we can only find yours using the random ID in your browser. To send it: open Lipi, open your browser's developer tools, go to Local Storage for this site, and copy the value of lipi-anonymous-id. Email it to contact@thelalabs.in with your request. We'll reply within 30 days. You can also simply clear this site's data in your browser to stop sending events under the old ID.

Children

Lipi has no accounts and collects no personal data, so it doesn't ask your age. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children, and we don't track, profile or target advertising at anyone.

Security

Data sent to us travels over HTTPS and is stored with access limited to the people who run Lipi. Because your content stays on your device, the security of your projects also depends on your own computer and browser.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. If a change affects what we collect, we'll mention it in Lipi. Continuing to use Lipi after a change means you accept the updated policy.

Contact and grievances

For questions, requests about your data, or complaints, write to Thela Labs at contact@thelalabs.in. We aim to acknowledge grievances within 7 days and resolve them within 30 days. If you're not satisfied with our response, you may approach the Data Protection Board of India.
